Mature Hairline | The Role Aging Plays in Hair Loss

September 24, 2021

1 Min read

Just like skin, our hair changes as we age. From mature hairlines to coarser textures to graying roots, hair aging is triggered by both internal and external factors. Interestingly, skin and hair anti-aging have a lot in common: hydration is the name of the game, and ingredients like collagen and antioxidants are your MVPs. To learn more about why hair ages and how to slow down the clock, we spoke to Dr. Hadley King, MD, a board-certified dermatologist.

Age-related hair loss & prevention

Dr. King says the two biggest drivers of age-related hair loss are genetics and hormones. “Female pattern hair thinning (androgenetic alopecia) is related to sensitivity of the hair follicles to hormones, which is primarily genetically determined,” she explains. Mature hairlines in men are similarly related to hormones and follicle sensitivity.

However, lifestyle factors like stress, poor diet, and overall health can accelerate genetic predisposition to hair loss, so prevention is key. Although we cannot hand-pick our genetics, we can certainly try to make healthier choices in our day to day life. These choices can ultimately support our hair health. Trying to manage stress can be just as important as having a balanced diet and staying hydrated. Another important factor for hair health is sleep and rest.

While two-thirds of American men experience noticeable hair loss by age 35, and approximately 85% of males have substantially thinning hair by the age of fifty, age-related hair thinning in women begins after age 40 and intensifies during menopause, when estrogen levels drop and testosterone becomes more dominant.

Menopause and the symptoms of menopause (insomnia, hot flashes, brain fog) can cause both mental and physical stress that worsens hair loss during this time of life. Our bodies also face more oxidative stress from free radicals as we get older, which is why antioxidant-rich foods and supplements are so important for hair anti-aging and whole-body vitality. It can be difficult to limit stressful factors in our lives, but it’s wise to try to take care of ourselves in every way possible. Even incorporating a self-care Sunday routine can make a difference.

In addition to staying hydrated, eating lots of high quality protein and green veggies, and managing stress, a natural hair supplement like Prose Root Source™ can support hair health against the effects of aging. Ingredients like grape extract are known to provide an antioxidant boost to fight oxidative stress caused by free radicals, while sustainably sourced saffron has been shown to modulate feelings of stress and anxiety in clinical studies

Unlike other hair supplements that target and block hormones, Root Source™ supports hair growth with a proprietary blend of clinically-proven millet, wheat, and coriander to stimulate hair growth at the bulb of the follicle, while thickening collagen to anchor and secure the hair*.

How aging affects hair color and texture

“Hair follicles contain melanocytes, which are the cells that produce the pigment melanin,” says Dr. King. “With age comes a reduction of melanin production; hair turns gray and eventually white.” Like hair loss from aging, graying hair is largely determined by genetics, Dr. King shared, but an unhealthy lifestyle (smoking, poor nutrition, low B vitamins) as well as health issues like anemia and thyroid conditions can speed up genetic predisposition to gray hair.

Since our products are natural and science-based, we have gathered plenty of wonderful and helpful ingredients to introduce to your hair. If your hair is affected genetically or environmentally, we can take a look at the results from your consultation and customize your hair care products to make them perfect for supporting your hair.

Although gray hairs are actually finer than non-gray hairs, they have a coarser texture that can make them look dry. “As we age, our sebaceous glands produce less sebum—which lubricates both skin and hair—leading to drier follicles,” explains Dr. King.

Custom products to look into

If you’d like to add some additional moisture to your hair, be sure to look into our hair oil, leave-in conditioner, or curl cream, depending on your hair type.

Our hair oil preserves strands and smooths away frizz whether used as a treatment before washing or as a styling finish.

For an added boost of moisture, we also feature a custom pre-shampoo hair mask. This high-concentration pre-wash treatment hydrates and smoothes hair lengths and ends. Your scalp also needs attention, and we have just the product for you.

Our custom pre-shampoo scalp mask is another great way to give your hair some extra attention. The custom formula could not exist without you, and the natural ingredients are sure to help support balance and restoration in your scalp. This scalp mask is also microbiome friendly. A healthy scalp is the foundation for good hair. Our new Scalp Mask is strong in active ingredients and has a micro-exfoliating texture to help restore balance and cleanse your scalp, leaving your skin soothed and revitalized without buildup or residue.

It also thoroughly prepares your hair for the upcoming shampoo and conditioner. Additionally, our mask has a high concentration of natural actives and is tailored to your specific scalp concerns. It’s also freshly made to order to keep the active ingredients potent—traditional hair masks lose power after months or years in the store. Here are some anti-aging tips for soft, hydrated, youthful hair:

  • Shampoo less: Since the scalp produces less sebum with age, it’s important to preserve natural oils by shampooing less frequently.
  • Avoid harsh ingredients: Dr. King says sulfates and other harsh detergents can strip natural oils and dry hair out. Opt for moisturizing products with clean ingredients.
  • Support collagen production: Collagen plays a key role in a healthy, hydrated scalp. The millet in Prose Root Source™ has been shown to increase the thickness of collagen in the connective tissue of the hair follicle, helping to keep it anchored and secured.
  • Don’t pluck grays: “Stay away from the tweezers!” says Dr. King. “At best you’ll make your hair thinner temporarily and at worst you can traumatize the hair follicle enough to cause scarring and the hair won’t grow back—permanently making your hair thinner.”

Natural ingredients to support your hair

We never use parabens, sulfates, phthalates, dyes, mineral oils, or GMOs in any of our products, and we never use animal testing. Your formula can be made vegan, silicone-free, or fragrance-free, depending on your preferences.

Root Source™ promotes hair development with a special mix of clinically-proven millet, wheat, and coriander to stimulate hair growth at the bulb of the follicle while thickening collagen to anchor and hold the hair*, unlike other hair supplements that target and inhibit hormones.

In addition to millet, wheat, and coriander, Root Source™ is customized with a mix of components that help to restore the scalp, control oil, nourish dry skin, relieve sensitivity, guard against pollution, and defend against the effects of stress.

Our ingredients are studied in-depth, and we are constantly on the hunt for more natural, sustainable and ethical ingredients to help hair health. Every product is custom-made to support your individual hair from the inside and out.
