According to Mike Petrizzi, hair colorist at Chris Chase Salon <\/a>in Manhattan, fairer skin types that have a hard time tanning and have creamier undertones look great with warm reds, like auburn, strawberry, or copper. \u201cPeople who can tan and have more olive complexions should go cooler\u2014think merlots, cranberry, and cherry reds,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

If you have a more neutral skin tone, Lizzie Caplan, Balayage and Creative Color Specialist at Soon Beauty Lab<\/a> in Fort Greene, says you can probably go either way. \u201cRihanna is proof, in my opinion, that confidence will sell any<\/em> shade of red.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

Before you decide to turn up the heat on your hair color, it\u2019s important to note that red will definitely take some more effort to maintain than other hair colors. \u201cI always tell my clients to wash their hair in lukewarm to cool water to prevent fading, though it\u2019s easier said than done with cooler weather approaching,\u201d says Caplan. \u201cI\u2019m a big fan of using a weekly tinted conditioner to maintain vibrancy between appointments.\u201d After you decide to make the red plunge, make sure to use a pre-shampoo mask<\/a> to help hair color from fading. Additionally, it\u2019s always smart to use a color-safe shampoo<\/a> and conditioner<\/a> to maintain vibrancy for as long as possible, too.\u00a0Caplan warns that if you aren\u2019t ready for lots of maintenance work, dying your hair red is not for you. \u201cIf you\u2019re not one for steady maintenance, stay away from reds,\u201d she says. \u201cBasically, red fades quicker than any other color, so it needs to be refreshed\u2014pulled through to the ends more frequently.\u201d Plus, it\u2019s more difficult to completely strip out of hair, should you decide you want to go back to a cooler or ashier tone.<\/p>\n\n
