Next best: a wide tooth comb, which is better than a traditional comb because it won\u2019t grab or pull as aggressively on knotty hair. Finally, you may also find success with what\u2019s called a wet brush, a tool typically characterized by very flexible bristles that bend with your hair.<\/p><h2>Do dampen<\/h2><p>Hair becomes more elastic (read: stretchy) when it\u2019s wet so you will lower the risk of breakage if you detangle when your strands are damp. Wetting with water works, but an even better strategy is spritzing on a detangling spray, which will give hair added slip and make it easier to unwind stubborn snarls. You can either use a pre-mixed detangling solution or make one of your own. Just combine one-half conditioner with one-half distilled water, pour into a spray bottle. Need even more slip than a detangling spray can provide? No tugging, ripping or yanking.<\/p><h2>Don\u2019t skip conditioner<\/h2><p>Even if your hair is very <a style=\"color: #ffa380;\" href=\"https:\/\/prose.com\/blog\/how-to-care-for-fine-hair.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fine<\/a> or on the <a style=\"color: #ffa380;\" href=\"https:\/\/prose.com\/blog\/how-to-treat-oily-hair.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">oily<\/a> side, you should still use a <a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/prose.com\/products\/custom-conditioner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conditioner<\/a> every time you <a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/prose.com\/products\/custom-shampoo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shampoo<\/a>. Just apply it from ear-level to the ends of your strands to keep that hair silky and snarl-resistant without adding any weight at the roots.<\/p><h2>Deep treat<\/h2><p>Using a <a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/prose.com\/products\/custom-hair-mask\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hair mask<\/a> or <a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/prose.com\/products\/custom-hair-oil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hair oil<\/a>\u00a0treatment once or twice a month will help keep the ends of your hair (where knots are most common) well-hydrated and less apt to become matted.<\/p><h2>See your stylist<\/h2><p>The strands most likely to tangle are those that are <a style=\"color: #ffa380;\" href=\"https:\/\/prose.com\/blog\/how-to-prevent-split-ends.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">splitting.<\/a> Thus, regular visits to the salon\u2014even just for a tiny trim or dusting\u2014will help keep your ends healthy and minimize matting.<\/p><h2>Watch what you wear<\/h2><p>Turtlenecks, scarves and high-collared coats all rub against the ends of your hair, causing friction that can lead to knots.
