{"id":2013,"date":"2019-02-28T11:59:56","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T16:59:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prose.com\/?p=2013"},"modified":"2021-05-13T13:46:22","modified_gmt":"2021-05-13T17:46:22","slug":"what-is-biotin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prose.com\/blog\/what-is-biotin","title":{"rendered":"What is Biotin and What Does it Do for Our Hair Health?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The relationship between your biotin intake and strong, vibrant, healthy hair is not entirely understood, but it is widely accepted that a deficiency in biotin can lead to hair loss and dulled <span style=\"color: #ffa180;\"><a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/prose.com\/hair-color-last-longer.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">color<\/a><\/span> (presumably from a loss of pigment). However, because a biotin deficiency can be difficult to diagnose, it is often not evident that you\u2019re short on B7 until there are outward symptoms, such as hair <span style=\"color: #ffa180;\"><a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/prose.com\/hair-loss-causes.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shedding<\/a><\/span>, color fading, brittle nails or a scaly skin rash.<\/p>\n<p>To keep from ever getting to that point, it may make sense to routinely integrate foods rich in biotin into your daily diet. A few options: egg yolks, nuts (and nut butters), whole grains, soybeans and other legumes, bananas, cauliflower and mushrooms. For extra insurance, you may also take biotin as a daily supplement. The recommended daily allowance of Biotin is about 30mcg, but because biotin is water soluble, if you do take more than your body needs, it will just be flushed out (thus you needn\u2019t worry about overdoing it).<\/p>\n<p>When applied topically, there is also evidence that biotin may strengthen existing strands and minimize splits and <span style=\"color: #ffa180;\"><a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/prose.com\/prevent-hair-damage.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breakage<\/a><\/span>, as well as nourish hair follicles on the <span style=\"color: #ffa180;\"><a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/prose.com\/scalp-health.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scalp<\/a><\/span>, improving the strength, elasticity and durability of new hair growth.
