{"id":8974,"date":"2020-06-29T18:12:36","date_gmt":"2020-06-29T22:12:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prose.com\/?p=8974"},"modified":"2025-06-05T16:41:49","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T20:41:49","slug":"hair-loss-women-end-stigma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prose.com\/blog\/hair-loss-women-end-stigma","title":{"rendered":"A Falling Out: It\u2019s Time to End the Stigma Around Hair Loss in Women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Take Massachusetts Representative Ayanna Pressley who\u2014in spite of being known for the <span style=\"color: #ffa180;\"><a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/best-black-hair-politics_n_5e17776ac5b650c621db4360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senegalese twists that proudly crowned her head<\/a><\/span> during her 2018 campaign\u2014publicly addressed the personal and political impact of her early stage alopecia in a <span style=\"color: #ffa180;\"><a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/theglowup.theroot.com\/exclusive-rep-ayanna-pressley-reveals-beautiful-bald-1841039847\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video for The Root<\/a><\/span> earlier this year. Pressley describes the day she lost her last bit of hair, coincidentally the day before she voted to impeach the President. She says it felt like the \u201closs of a limb.\u201d \u201cIt was a moment of transformation not of my choosing\u2026 I felt naked, exposed, vulnerable. I felt embarrassed, I felt ashamed, I felt betrayed,\u201d she says in the video, \u201cand then I also felt that I was participating in a cultural betrayal.\u201d As a mentor and role model for her young black supporters, some of whom lovingly refer to themselves as members of \u201c#TwistNation,\u201d Pressley\u2019s hair loss was especially painful. Still, she says, \u201cI am making peace with having alopecia. I have not arrived there\u2026 But I\u2019m making progress everyday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not all female pattern hair loss is as dramatic or public as Pressley\u2019s, but it almost always takes a toll on the person undergoing changes that are out of their control. To further break down the stigma, we\u2019ve compiled a list of the essential information you need to know about female hair loss.<\/p>\n<h2>Not your daddy\u2019s androgenetic alopecia<\/h2>\n<p>Hair loss in women is not the same as MPB, and can impact different areas of the head. Instead of a receding hairline, for example, many women with hair loss conditions experience thinning around the entire scalp. <span style=\"color: #ffa180;\"><a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/nyulangone.org\/conditions\/hair-loss\/types\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to NYU Langone<\/a><\/span>, women and children are impacted by 15 different types of hair loss: androgenetic alopecia or female pattern baldness; telogen effluvium, a condition that is generally temporary caused by stress; anagen effluvium, or rapid hair loss caused by medical treatments like chemotherapy; alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that attacks hair follicles and causes what is often permanent hair loss on the entire body; tinea capitis, a fungal infection also known as scalp ringworm that primarily affects children; cicatricial alopecia, a rare inflammatory disruption that causes scar tissue to block hair follicles from regrowth; hair shaft abnormalities caused by psychiatric disorders like trichotillomania that compel a person to rip their own hair out; and hypotrichosis, a rare genetic condition that begins in infancy and often causes total baldness by age 25.<\/p>\n<h2>Hormonal changes<\/h2>\n<p>Female pattern baldness increases a woman\u2019s risk of <span style=\"color: #ffa180;\"><a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/ghr.nlm.nih.gov\/condition\/polycystic-ovary-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)<\/a><\/span>, which often leads to increased hair growth in other areas of the body (hirsutism), as well as acne, irregular menstruation, weight gain, difficulties getting pregnant or complications with pregnancies, and, in some cases, infertility. Hair loss in women is also sometimes associated with extreme cases of <span style=\"color: #ffa180;\"><a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/thyroid-and-hair-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hyperthyroidism<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>Hair triggers<\/h2>\n<p>Hair loss in women can be triggered by several unsuspecting factors, including immense stress. A major trauma or medical event, like a transplant or childbirth, can cause telogen effluvium, a condition which pushes several hair follicles into a resting phase all at once. Telogen effluvium is different from androgenetic alopecia because it is temporary and hair growth will resume when the body\u2019s stress levels return to normal. Signs to look for: hair loss at the top of the scalp, clumps of hair falling out in the shower or when you brush or comb it, even clumps of hair on your pillow when you wake up in the morning.<\/p>\n<h2>Racial disparities<\/h2>\n<p>A study done at Boston University&#8217;s Slone Epidemiology Center surveyed 5,600 black women about their experiences with hair loss. They found that <span style=\"color: #ffa180;\"><a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/skin-problems-and-treatments\/hair-loss\/news\/20160304\/black-womens-hair-styling-choices-can-cause-hair-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">roughly 48 percent of these women<\/a><\/span> said they had \u201csuffered hair loss on the crown or top of the scalp.\u201d While there may be certain genetic factors, most medical professionals attribute this to specific styling practices like tight braids, weaves, and chemical relaxers, which can cause central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) and<span style=\"color: #ffa180;\"> <a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/02\/fashion\/braids-weaves-extensions-and-traction-alopecia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">traction alopecia<\/a><\/span>. According to the researchers behind this study, CCCA \u201ccauses inflammation and destruction of hair follicles that results in scarring and permanent hair loss\u201d and often goes undiagnosed in black women. But this particular condition, while responsive to treatment, can usually also be managed by putting less pressure on the hair follicles\u2014limiting tight hairstyles and chemical relaxers to a minimum.<\/p>\n<h2>Impact on mental health<\/h2>\n<p>Hair loss in both men and women has been associated with mental health issues like depression and anxiety. The link here, physicians believe, is cultural and social. <span style=\"color: #ffa180;\"><a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/skin-and-beauty\/psychological-effects-of-hair-loss.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Everyday Health<\/a><\/span> rightfully observes that \u201calmost every society in the world associates luxurious hair with youth, beauty, and good health,\u201d so it\u2019s no wonder why hair loss can have devastating effects. And while we at Prose certainly love hair, we know it doesn\u2019t define us and our worth as human beings. And besides, <span style=\"color: #ffa180;\"><a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2020\/04\/quarantined-people-talk-about-shaving-their-heads.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">short hair is all the buzz right now<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to <span style=\"color: #ffa180;\"><a style=\"color: #ffa180;\" href=\"https:\/\/prose.com\/ways-to-combat-female-hair-loss.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">female hair loss<\/a><\/span>, just like in so many other situations, visibility matters.
