Chances are, you’ve heard a lot about the benefits of probiotics. New to the ingredient spotlight are Prebiotics, the next big scalp and skin care star.

Both probiotics and Prebiotics are all about restoring balance, and both have extremely positive effects on your microbiome. The microbiome is the mix of bacteria, yeasts, and parasites that live on your skin, in your nose and trachea, and in your gut. The mix of all of these is closely linked to weight, autoimmune health and diabetes.

Your scalp and skin microbiome revs up the production of lipids to strengthen your physical barrier. It also greatly affects the skin and scalp’s immune system. We know that an imbalance in the skin’s microbiome is directly linked to irritations such as redness and flaky scalp.

Probiotics contain live microbes like bacteria and yeast. These microbes can create a well-balanced ecosystem on the skin and scalp, while prebiotics are substances that feed good bacteria and help them to colonize, making even more good bacteria.

Think of Prebiotics as a fertilizer for the good bacteria, making your scalp microbiome strong and healthy.

The result is a balanced scalp, with a decrease in unwanted flora and an increase in the good microbes. In other words, a balanced scalp is a happy scalp.

Where It’s Sourced

Fermentation is a process that preserves food through the production of good bacteria. In the traditional fermentation process, bacteria or yeast is introduced to break sugars down into simpler molecules such as alcohols and acids. This increases the nutritional value by releasing thousands of beneficial micro nutrients such as vitamins B and E, plant polyphenols, oligosaccharides, amino acids, enzymes and fatty acids.

Prose sources its Prebiotics from GMO-free corn grown in France. The sugars in the corn are extracted, and mixed with a fermenting enzyme that turn these sugars into polymeric sugar, which is designed to make a film on the scalp that affects the scalp microbiome. Prose is one of the pioneers incorporating prebiotics into hair care products.

The Behind-the-Scenes Science: Keep Scalp Healthy

Since Prebiotics basically feed probiotics, and boost their production, they are essential in helping create a healthier environment for skin and hair.

When applied topically, Prebiotics create a film on the scalp that can decrease the population of unwanted flora while stimulating the beneficial microbes.
