2A Hair Complete Guide: Understanding, Caring for, and Styling Your 2A Waves

Understanding your hair type and how to look after it is the key first step in your haircare journey. Hair can be divided into four main types, straight, wavy, curly, and coily, with different subcategories for each type. Once you have identified your hair type, you can start to build a haircare routine that will help your specific hair type shine and look its best.

Type 2 hair falls into the ‘wavy’ hair type, with the 2A hair type having the loosest waves. Read on to learn how to understand, care for, and style 2A hair for men and women.

    What is 2A Hair?

2A hair has the least defined waves in the wavy hair category. 2A hair can be straight at the roots, with beachy waves throughout the lengths. Its subtle bends along the hair shaft give the hair an ‘S’ shape. Like other wavy hair types, 2A hair is straight when washed and starts to form wave patterns as it dries. People with type 2 hair often have fine hair.

Although 2A hair is sometimes called 2A waves, it lies between straight and wavy hair and has the least definition of all wavy hair subcategories. To correctly identify your curl pattern, gently pull out a few strands from your head after a shower and let them dry on a flat surface before comparing them with photos of different types.

How to Take Care of 2A Hair

2A hair tends to require more frequent washing than 3 and 4 hair types. This is because the hair has a smoother shaft, so natural oils travel down it faster. If you use a lot of product on 2A hair, you may notice that it gets oily more quickly and becomes lank.

Here are our top tips for a 2A haircare routine:

    Shampooing:

Use a lightweight but protein-rich shampoo specifically for wavy hair that will not weigh it down. Gentle shampoos that clean without stripping natural oils are the best choice.

    Conditioner:

Similarly, a lighter conditioner will keep 2A hair light and bouncy without adding weight.

    Leave-In Conditioner:

A light conditioning spray will help 2A hair to stay nourished and soft without becoming greasy. Heavier gels and creams may make 2A hair feel flat at the roots.

    Dry Shampoo:

Dry shampoo tackles oily roots, meaning you don’t have to wash your hair too much. Overwashing hair can dry it out and irritate the scalp.

    Brushing and Combing:

2A hair requires gentle brushing and combing to keep it healthy. Always start from the bottom of the hair and work your way up, using a wide-toothed comb for any tricky tangles.

    How to Style 2A Hair

To protect and enhance your natural 2A waves, careful styling is key. When your hair is wet, use a texturizing or volumizing 2A hair product to get the best waves. Coat both palms with the product and scrunch it through your hair until your waves start to form. Styling upside down will give the best results.

When drying your hair, air drying is the most effective method for 2As. Use a microfiber towel or a soft cotton T-shirt to get rid of excess moisture while avoiding disturbing your natural waves. Using a hairdryer or other styling tools can damage fine hair types and lead to frizz. If you do use a hair dryer, try to use a special curl diffuser and put it on a lower heat setting.

At night, a silk pillowcase or a silk bonnet helps preserve waves and avoid tangling. You could also braid your hair before bed, or use a silk scrunchie to keep it in a loose bun or ponytail on top of your head. Every hair type has a different styling method and you may need to try several approaches until you find the best fit for your hair.

2A hair needs more ‘refreshing’ than other curl types. Use dry shampoo to boost your volume, or mist your hair using a spray bottle filled with water and/or leave-in conditioner to refresh your waves in between washes.

    Customize your 2A Hair Products

Although 2A hair is characterized by loose waves, all hair is unique and some people even have a mix of hair types. Understanding the ingredients in your hair products will help you to take the best care of your hair.

For example, our Custom Curl Cream is great for 2A hair types. It brings out your hair’s natural texture, adds moisture, and minimizes frizz for a beautiful, healthy style. Natural oils like linseed and jojoba oil define waves, nourish the hair shaft, and add incredible shine.
