Our Favorite NYFW Natural Hair Moments

February 19, 2019

5 Min read

Before this year’s New York Fashion Week even began, Valentino broke records during Paris Couture Week by featuring 43 black models out of the 65 total, something that is completely unprecedented for the couture world and unfortunately doesn’t normally happen in the other fashion spheres either. So, when black beauty is celebrated, we love to highlight its power. Here are some of our favorite natural hair moments from NYFW Fall/Winter 2019.

Phillip Lim

The predominately muted color palette of Phillip Lim’s collection along with the subtly graphic makeup his models sported paired perfectly with chill cornrows and natural hair.

Oscar De La Renta

The rich tones and textures utilized in Oscar De La Renta’s collection paired beautifully with tan and deep skin. This show also played around with cornrows, curls, and coils.

Elevated elegance. Our #odlrfall2019 crystal-embroidered coat is simply breathtaking on @BlesnyaMinher.

Chromat

Chromat’s show was fun and inclusive, as always. These bleach blonde, jumbo cornrows complete with snorkeling gear fastened to their ends was definitely a stand out look.

Gypsey Sport

Of course, the always unapologetic Gypsey Sport brought inclusivity and major looks to the forefront of their show.

Christian Cowan

Quirky makeup and bright accessories were a highlight of the Christian Cowan show. Bejeweled, neon stocking caps adorned models’ heads allowing a bit of hair to pouf out from underneath. The final look also included a beautiful crystal link Hijab on model Halima.

Self Portrait

Self Portrait’s powerful, yet feminine woman kept it simple when it came to her beauty look this season. All face, no fuss was the vibe.

Area

No show had more fun with hair than Area this season. The brand went all out with diamante accessories, which they weaved into bantu knots and even created entire ponytails with. Who needs laid edges when you have a crystal hairline?

Nicole Miller

The hair at Nicole Miller’s show felt very expressive and even had moment of whimsy, brought to you by none other than braided, rainbow pigtails.

Marc Jacobs

A known problem-child when it comes to appropriation, Marc Jacobs reigned in the beauty looks this year for his show and ended fashion week with a bang. You can barely see the feathered beanie on top of Adut’s head, but that just allows the dress to pop and her melanin to further flourish.
