Down to the Root: Joel Moore’s Ambiguous Take on Fashion
Background check
Has fashion always piqued your interest?
Fashion has definitely always piqued my interest especially at an early age. I always saw my family put their best foot forward when it came to dressing and presenting themselves to the world and that’s something that has stuck with me to this day. In terms of learning about fashion, my brother attended SCAD and majored in fashion design when I was in middle school, so he was the one that really introduced me to the art.
What’s your favorite thing about fashion?
My favorite thing about fashion is that it truly is a form of self-expression. I love that you can create a look which reflects your personality depending on your mood.
What message are you trying to relay to your audience through the content on your channels?
My personal style and/or motto for fashion has always been “blurring the lines between menswear and womenswear”. This is the message that I strongly convey on my socials. Fashion has no gender and you should be able to wear what you want when you want without feeling judged.
Think fast
Who makes you feel most yourself?
As cheesy as it sounds, my close friends and family. I think it’s important to have a support system that will lift you up and encourage you to do your best no matter what. Having people in your life where you can just laugh, be silly and yourself is good for the soul.
What is something you can’t live without doing every day?
I definitely could not live without doing my skincare routine every single day. Even if it’s a gloomy day and I have nowhere to go, I still try to make it an effort to take care of my skin.
When do you feel the most challenged?
I feel the most challenged when things aren’t going right throughout the day. There are days when I struggle to keep up with constantly creating content and my ideas may not turn out exactly how I thought they would in my head, but instead of being hard or down on myself, I always try to take a moment to stop and breathe.
Where do you feel most at home?
I feel most at home in New York City. I moved here immediately after high school for college at the age of eighteen so I’ve spent most of my adult life here. It’s an amazing city that has shaped me into the person I am today. I was never really 100% comfortable in my skin until moving to NYC. I love that I get to view all walks of life and meet people who are accepting of every background. Plus, it’s the city that never sleeps and there’s always something to do.
Why do you do what you do, professionally speaking?
I started blogging/creating digital content 8+ years ago in 2012 and I never in a million years thought that it would turn into my career. I initially started because I wanted a leg up in an industry that sometimes feels so difficult to break into. Now I think it’s so cool to communicate with people all over the world especially when we share common interests. I’ve met so many great people along the way and I want to continue to inspire people to be their best selves.
Hairy details
What’s your hair routine like? Are you a minimalist or maximalist when it comes to your strands?
When I was younger, my haircare routine was definitely minimal because I didn’t exactly know how to properly take care of my hair. Now I’m in a sweet spot of being a minimalist and maximalist when it comes to my routine. Some days need more attention than others when it comes to nourishment. After shampooing and conditioning my hair, I like to use a leave-in conditioner and/or curl cream to enhance my curls. Some days I’ll add a hair oil on top of that for extra shine but will typically only use a hair oil the following days until my next wash.
Do you have any beauty hacks that you think people should know about?
I’m not sure if this is a beauty hack, but drink tons of water! I know this is something that people always preach, but water really does wonders for your skin. It’s important to have that glow from the inside out.
But wanna tell that this is very beneficial , Thanks for taking your time to write this. [Reply]
