When Is The Right Time To Switch Up Your Hair Care?

January 25, 2019

3 Min read

You’ve likely heard the oft-repeated advice that you should mix up your hair care products so your hair won’t “get used to them.” So, every few months you swap out your shampoo and/or conditioner to keep them from becoming ineffective. This adage is partially true. What’s not accurate? The idea that your hair builds up a tolerance for a formula’s active ingredients, rendering them less potent. Hair care is not akin to antibiotics; there’s no risk that frequent exposure to a shampoo or conditioner compromises their efficacy. What is accurate? Reevaluating and editing your regimen every two to three months can maximize your hair’s health. Here’s why.

Your Hair’s Needs Change With The Seasons

You wouldn’t wear a sundress during a polar vortex or snow boots on a sweltering day. Similarly, your hair care regimen should shift with seasonal changes. In the winter, when common complaints are static and chronic dryness, your hair care probably needs richer moisturizing ingredients, and in steamy July, when many suffer from an oilier scalp or limp locks, ingredients that target oil output are more appropriate.

At Prose, we often infuse argan, sacha yushi and jojoba oils into our cold-weather formulas, while a cocktail of sebum-regulating kale, spirulina and peppermint are used more frequently when conditions are hotter and stickier. This is why, when creating your customized Prose regimen, we ask you for your zip code. Knowing your current climate enables us to create formulas that consider temperature both inside and outhumidity levels, sun exposure, and even pollution—when creating products to care for your hair. Plus, with each reorder, we’ll update your formulas for seasonal or geographic shifts.

Your health impacts your hair

Illness, hormonal fluctuations (e.g. pregnancy or perimenopause), and even a sudden spike in stress, can all affect the condition of your strands. How? Illness (or the medication you take to temper it) can diminish new growth; hormonal fluctuations can trigger fallout; and extreme stress can deplete your nutritional reserves, leaving your locks duller, weaker and dryer. Therefore, revisiting your consultation answers each time you order, likely every two to three months, can help account for changes to your health—and allow us to make necessary updates to your hair care.

A new style makes new demands

If you decide to make the color leap from brunette to blonde, fight frizz with an in-salon keratin smoothing treatment, or spring for a perm to coax beachy waves out of your stick-straight strands, it follows that you will also need to update your hair care regimen to best meet the needs of your new ‘do. For instance: The newly-blonde may want a shampoo or conditioner with purple pigments to help keep your new hue true. The keratin-smoothed will want protein-rich products to extend the lifespan of your smoothing service. And the chemically-curled will need a major moisture infusion, as perms can leave hair pretty parched. Bottom line: Anytime you dramatically alter your hair, it’s time to also reconsider its care.
