How do I choose the right gel hold?
“There are a few factors to consider when choosing a hair gel, such as the type of gel (light, medium, or strong hold gel), the amount of product you need, and your hair type,” Roberts says.

- Soft: For light definition and reduced frizz, without any cast.
- Medium: A flexible hold level, for definition, reduced frizz with a soft breakable cast.
- Strong: A flexible strong hold gel, for next level definition, reduced frizz and refreshable long-wearing styles.
If you have very fine or thin hair, you may want to try a light hold gel to avoid weighing down your hair. If you have thicker or coarser hair, you may need a stronger hold gel to keep your style in place, Roberts explains.
You also have to consider your hair type. If your hair is oily, then you’ll want to choose a gel that doesn’t add too much moisture, as this can make your hair look greasy. On the other hand, if your hair is dry, then you’ll want to use a gel that adds moisture.
Soft gel can be great for creating natural-looking styles or for adding a little bit of shine. Medium hair gel hold is perfect for most hair types; it provides good hold and definition without being too heavy. A strong hold gel hold is ideal for thick or coarse hair, as it can help to tame unwanted frizz and flyaways, Roberts says.
When should I level up my hold?
If you are living in a high humidity environment: a higher hold level will create a stronger protective shaft against humidity entering the hair fiber, disrupting the curl pattern.
Also, if you notice your curls becoming less defined throughout the week, it may be time to up the hold level.
When should I choose medium or strong hold?
This depends on many factors including your hair type, your environment and the style you are going for. A few Prose pro tips to consider:
- If you have highly porous hair: a higher hold level will create a stronger protective shaft, which will help porous hair keeping moisture locked in and humidity locked out.
- If you have a tighter texture and often want a long wearing slicked down hairstyle
- If you have very long hair: a higher hold level will help keep curls and coils bouncy and lightweight.
