The Prose Pledge: Inclusive for Consumers & Sustainable for the Environment

April 21, 2019

1 Min read

Here at Prose, we’ve been sustainable from day one thanks to the custom, made-to-order nature of our products. However, we’re not stopping there. We’re taking our efforts further by transforming our business to one that’s sustainable from start to finish. Below, we’ve outlined everything from how Prose came to be, to why we’ve made certain business decisions and how we’re continuing to make changes for the better.

Why We Started Prose

Sustainability goes hand in hand with customization. That’s to say they’re both core to Prose’s DNA. Our made-to-order production model already sets us apart from more traditional brands because we’re not overproducing and therefore needlessly creating excess waste.

In fact up to 40% of mass-produced beauty and personal care products go unsold and end up in landfills, which not only generates waste but contributes needlessly to CO2 emissions. Because we are purposeful about our production we’re not pumping more waste into an already broken system.

We’re proud to be an active part of the solution, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have more room for more improvement. Here’s how we vow to continue innovating—not just for the consumer, but also for the planet.

The Problem Facing the Beauty Industry Today

Simply put, recycling is broken. National Geographic reports that out of the 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic that has been produced, 6.3 billion metric tons has become plastic waste. Of that only about 9% of plastic produced has been recycled. And at this most crucial time for the environment, the situation continues to worsen. New international trade laws have impacted the chances that recyclable plastic is actually being recycled or dealt with responsibly. We’ve taken notice of this growing issue and are changes to do our part in becoming even more sustainable.

Our Current Wins and Ongoing Goals

We’ve taken a deep look at our practices and have come up with a few objectives we’d like to hit as a company. Two big ones being transparency and accountability. In order to track our progress, we’re excited to share three wins and also three goals that we’re currently working towards.

Three Wins

1. No Overproduction

Hair care that’s customized and made-to-order for each person means no excess waste. You can be sure this will never change. It’s core to who we are.

2. Reducing Excess Packaging

For returning Prose customers, there is now an easy way to opt out of receiving new pumps with your order so that you can reuse your existing pumps.

3. Repurposing Production Goods

We’re always looking for ways for any leftover materials from our production process to be repurposed. We recently donated post-industrial materials, like our pallets and boxes, to build an adventure playground in Brooklyn, NY.

Three Goals

1. Greener, Better, More Ethical Formulas.

Our ingredients are all sourced from suppliers or distributors located in Europe where testing on animals has been banned since 2013, so we’re happy to say we’re 100% cruelty-free. However, even though we require detailed information on the sourcing and production of the ingredients, some suppliers are not as transparent as we’d like them to be, which is a huge issue for us. That’s why we’ve pledged to become tougher on our suppliers and to hold them accountable.

That being said, we’re proud of the positive social and environmental impact our ingredients have around the world. For example, our argan oil comes from women’s cooperatives that focus on improving working conditions and generating additional income. Additionally, our ungurahui oil is sourced from the Amazon in a method that aids in the fight against deforestation. You can learn more about our other sustainable oils here.

Finally, you can rest assured that we will continue our no nasties promise. By nasties we mean ingredients that raise proven health, ethical, or environmental concerns.

2. Not just 100% recyclable, but 100% recycled

Currently, our bottles are 100% recyclable, but by 2020 the goal is not to introduce virgin plastics into our production process. That means we will make them from recycled bottles and/or other recycled plastics and ensure they are actually recycled.

3. Become a carbon-neutral company

We have a long road ahead of us to become a carbon-neutral company, and we’re working towards zero-waste. This means offsetting our carbon emissions and updating our production processes to ensure sustainability from start to finish.

Keep an eye out for our official Prose progress card so you can easily track any new goals that we set and so you can help us celebrate the ones that we complete. Also, check out this Medium article written by our CEO Arnaud Plas for an in-depth look at the high sustainability ambitions we’ve set for Prose.

  1. Instead of plastIc refIlls you should find another way as all plaStic thats aent to RECYCLING DOESNT gET recycled

    1. Hi Tracy! We are aware of how broken recycling currently is and are just as frustrated with it as you are! We have considered switching our packaging to glass bottles, but the safety hazard of having glass bottles in showers has stopped us. Stay tuned and keep up with our Prose progress card to follow along with us as we reach (and hopefully exceed!) our sustainability goals, one of which includes implementing a closed loop production system, which would eliminate our use of virgin materials. Thanks!

      1. Could you do a return program similar to plaine products? Customers mail in the empty bottles when they are done.

        1. Hi Kate, Unfortunately at the moment we do not have a recycling program, but we have shared your feedback with our team and we are always looking for more ways to be sustainable.

          -Keely, Prose Community Manager

        1. Hi Hannah, in addition to the safety hazard, glass is also much heavier to ship than other alternatives meaning that it has a higher carbon footprint. While glass packaging isn’t the right option for us, we are actively looking into alternative methods to make our bottles more eco-friendly ❤️

          -Keely, Prose Community Manager

      2. Have yall thought about a buy back program? Just lime how people used to exchange milk cartons? When A client’s new product comes in have them send back their empty bottles in the same box? Then the box wont be being thrown away right away, your plastics make it bAck to you, and then yall can either reused and send them back to the same client or melt them down and remake them into a new bottle! 🙂

  2. Hi, I, unfortunately, skimmed this post, but I was wondering if the company thought of a closed loop cycle for the bottles themselves? If I can save the pump, can I also return my bottle to be refilled? best.

    1. Hi Ava! A closed loop cycle is definitely our ultimate goal as we are working towards becoming a zero-waste company. Follow along with our soon to be released Prose progress card to check in on how we’re doing!

    2. Exactly! I would be more likely to use prose if I could send back my used bottles to be refilled, recycling does not work.

  3. I am a fairly new customer already love prose and this pledge makes me love it even more. I do have a suggestion, can you make the pumps optional? I don’t use mine and I don’t know what to do with them. I now have two sets and it is such a waste of materials and a little device that could be useful. hope there is a way to make it optional for customers, like have a box to check if you need pumps for the new bottles. i have to believe i am not the only one and every bit counts. thanks!

    1. Hi Maria! So happy to hear that you are loving your Prose so far! Pumps actually are optional now! For returning customers there is now an easy way to opt out of receiving new ones with each order. Great minds think alike!

    1. Hi Lynn! And we are so happy to have you as our customer! Thank you for your kind words. We hope to continue to make you proud!

    1. Hi Cindy, that is a great suggestion! This is definitely something our team is looking into in the future. Thank you for your feedback.

      -Keely, Prose Community Manager

  4. This is largely why I chose to try prose in the first place, and reading this makes me even happier about my decision. Doesn’t hurt that Prose products have made my hair look and feel so much better! I look forward to seeing what new strides you make as time goes on. Thank you for being such a great model for other companies…I hope they’re watching and learning!

    1. Hi Vicki! Wow! We’re so happy that you’ve trusted us with your hair and are thrilled to have you as part of our community! We’re excited for you to come along with us as we grow. Thank you for your kind words!

  5. I too use the prose and ditched my other shampoos but would love a refill system or big big bottles so not so much waste. trying the hair oil. just ordered it.

    1. Hi Elizabeth! So happy to hear that you’re loving Prose and we hope that you love your custom hair oil, too! As far as reducing waste is concerned, we are working towards a closed loop system which would eliminate our use of virgin plastic during production. Stay tuned to find out when we reach that goal!

  6. Hello! I love that you all are a cruelty free company. Are you backed by any organizations that certify companies as Cruelty free?

  7. Hi! I would love to be able to return my used bottles For refills. I currently subscRibe so have a new shipment cOming regularly. Since i already have the packaging, it seems like it would be an easy return. Hope you guys can consiDer Adding Something like that to your sUstainability INITIATIVES. Thanks!

    1. Hi Mara, thank you for the feedback. This is a program our team is actively looking into and is something we hope to implement in the future.

      -Keely, Prose Community Manager

  8. Hello,

Please let me know when prose is Starting a pilot project for the closed loop system. I have a fEw empTy prose bottles With the stickers removed and Ready to be sent back for recycling!

  9. considering becoming a prose customer but wanted to check on your SUSTAINABILITY efforts first. Happy to have found this post, but was unable to locate the “progress Card” that you mentioned multiple times above…

  10. Hi, love the commitment to sustainability. I was a bit shocked to see so much cardboard packaging (and printed cardstock pieces too!) for 2 fairly robust plastic bottles. It was a beautiful unboxing, which I’m sure was intended. However, it seems like too much material for subsequent orders. Would be great to be able to opt into less packaging, if preferred.

    1. Hi Jax, this is a great suggestion and we totally hear you! We have shared your feedback with our team and we are always looking for more ways to be sustainable.

      -Keely, Prose Community Manager

  11. Hello! I was wondering if Prose has met these sustainable goals for 2020, as I am interested in trying this brand while maintaining a zer0-waste lifestyle. Thank you!

  12. Are there any updates on this? It looks like a lot of great plans, but I don’t see how the follow-up has gone.

  13. I Only waSh my hear 4 or 5 times a month. This would be stock pIling for me. Can you do every two months. What is your returns policy also.

    1. Hi Barbara, yes! You can adjust your subscription frequency to every 1, 2, or 3 months based on your needs. We have a 100% satisfaction guarantee within 30 days of delivery. This means that you can either return your products for a full refund or try out an adjusted formula.

      -Keely, Prose Community Manager

  14. Just placed my first subscription order with prose. I love the dedication to sustainability from this company and am wondering if you are considering switching to glass packaging? Infinitely recyclable and much more sustainable.

    1. Hi Sydney, thank you for your feedback and we want to assure you that we are committed to being sustainable and friendly to our environment. The reason we do not use glass bottles is because they can become slippery in the shower resulting in breaking and safety concerns. Additionally, glass is much heavier to ship compared to plastic which means it creates a larger carbon footprint. Currently, our packaging is reusable and recyclable but we are always looking for ways to become more eco-friendly in the future ? We hope you are enjoying your Prose products!

      -Keely, Prose Community Manager

  15. Have you solved the recycled plastic bottles issues yet?

“Currently, our bottles are 100% recyclable, but by 2020 the goal is not to introduce virgin plastics into our production process. That means we will make them from recycled bottles and/or other recycled plastics and ensure they are actually recycled.”

  16. is the packaging used from recycled materials? also, are the direction cards that come in the box made from recycled materials?

  17. Hi! have you guys reached your goal of recycled plastic packaging yet? It says 2020 in the article and I want to know what the progress is before i buy!

  18. Is there a way to return bottles to you so they can be properly recycled? I’m concerned with the current recycling process. thank you!

    1. H! At the moment, we don’t yet have a system for returning your bottles to be refilled. However, all Prose bottles are made of 100% recyclable BPA free PET, and our shampoo and conditioner’s caps are made of aluminum. That being said, we’re considering even more environmentally friendly options as we work towards our sustainability goals.

      -Keely, Prose Community Manager

  19. Hey 🙂 i am hoping to USE PROSE ONCE I AM AFFIRMED THAT IT IS MORE SUSTAINABLE. wHAT IF WE COULD SEND THEM BACK IN FOR REUSE SINCE IT IS A UNIQUE FORMULA… WE COULD REUSE OUR UNIQUE BOTTLES?
    SHIPPING ON THE CONSUMER?
iS THERE A WAY TO BE AFFIRMED WHEN YOU GUYS, ATLEAST, SWITCH FULLY TO RECYCLED MATERIALS?

  20. I haven’t yet tried prose, I’m in the thinking/research process. Sorry if I’m late to game, but I just came across this article. The whole time reading it I was screaming in my bead “glass!!” As there are so many products, outside of haircare, that could do wonders if they switched. And then I read the comments and it dawned on me why glass would be unsafe. So I shut my phone off, rolled over to go back to sleep. (It’s early morning and what do we do when we can’t sleep? We online shop of course!) and then it hit me. What about using some type of tin or metal? Like the tumblers replacing water bottles. With maybe some type of rubber, grippy bottom. It’s not a perfect solution but it is better recycled than plastic is. I also think a closed loop system is a great idea!

    1. Hi Jess, that is a great suggestion and we are always looking for ways to be more sustainable! Thank you for the feedback, we will share it with our team 🙂

      -Keely, Prose Community Manager

    1. Hi there, unfortunately at the moment we do not have a recycling program, but we have shared your feedback with our team and we are always looking for more ways to be sustainable. 21. I’m in the market for some new hair care, but sustainability and zero-waste come first for me. I’m wondering since it is now 2021 have you achieved your company goal of using 100% recycled materials for your bottles?

  22. With your goal to use only recycled plastic containers, how is that going now that 2020 has come and gone?? Maybe even make suggestions on how to reuse the containers to further appeal to the sustainability of you product. For example: I am an art teacher so I will take all my containers to school and reuse them for art projects, containers, and more. Have you considered trying to create your product in bar form to eliminate plastics all together? Just some food for thought and I am looking forward to how your company continues to not only personalizes the self care routine but also help with the waste beauty products tend to accumulate.

    1. Hi Autumn, that is an amazing suggestion! Thank you for the feedback, we will be sharing it with our team. In the meantime, we’d love to have you check out our values & impact page where we’ve shared the latest updates on our commitment to sustainability: https://prose.com/values-and-impact

      -Keely, Prose Community Manager

  23. Two years late, but where can I find the link for the Progress Card? Also, any news on being able to send our bottles back for refills? I absolutely love Prose, but can’t continue to order if I can’t find a way to reuse these bottles. The plastic waste is too much 🙁

    1. Hi Sierra, thank you so much for the feedback. We totally hear you. Unfortunately at the moment we do not have a recycling program, but we have shared your feedback with our team and we are always looking for more ways to be sustainable. In the meantime, we’d love for you to check out our values and impact page for an update on where we are with our sustainability efforts, our commitments to the environment, and more ❤️ https://prose.com/values-and-impact

  24. Hello, I just finished a bottle of my hair mask and am wondering what to do with the empty bottle. Of course, I will recycle it, but It makes me wonder what sustainability goals Prose has for 2021 and beyond. As this article states, recycling is broken, and it would be great to see Prose try to figure out a way to cut out plastics entirely from their production process. I love my shampoo and mask, but not the plastic waste!

    1. Hi Leah, we’re glad to hear you’re loving your Prose products and we totally hear you on reducing plastic waste. We’d love for you to check out our values and impact page for an update on where we our with our sustainability practices, our commitment to the environment, and more. https://prose.com/values-and-impact ❤️

      -Keely, Prose Community Manager

  25. Hello! I am a prospective customer and as someone in a very low-waste household, the plastic bottles make me feel a little hesitant. I saw a goal was to be using 100% post consumer recycled plastic by 2020–were you able to meet that goal? Thanks!

  26. I’d love to see aluminum containers similar to the new products launched by ByHumanKind. I am ending my subscription with prose, as I’m moving away from all plastic. Once you figure out an alternative, such as shampoo bars or aluminum, I’ll be back!

    1. Hi Gina! We totally hear you and appreciate your feedback. Sustainability is a core value of our company and we’re always looking for ways to become more environmentally friendly. Please stay tuned and if you’re interested, head here to check out our relationship with sustainability: https://prose.com/values-and-impact

  27. Hi there! It really would mean a lot if we could have some way of sending bottles back or getting better packaging that isn’t plastic to refill our bottles instead. It’s a lot of plastic bottles at the end of the year!

    1. Hi Adriana, thank you so much for the suggestion! Our team is actively working on eco-friendly alternative packaging options. While we haven’t found the right option yet, we’d love for you to follow our progress at- https://prose.com/values-and-impact.

      -Keely, Prose Community Manager

  28. Love to see the wins! I would also love to see a closed loop system so I can return my empties and know they are being recycled/reused!

  29. Would you be willing to look into shampoo/conditioner bars to give the option to not use plastic bottles at all? Thanks!

  30. Hi, I would like to know if you’ve been thinking on the option of refilling our own bottles, like returning them for a refill. Although it would be like getting the order and returning the empty bottles.
    Just thinking.
    Thanks

  31. Hi there! I saw another comment suggesting bars and/or solid concentrates but I didn’t see a response. So I just wanted to lend my voice to support the idea. Then there are no plastic bottles at all. Thanks!

    1. Hey Debra! Thanks so much for your suggestion. We’ll share it back with our team 🙂
