So You’ve Got Your Custom Curl Cream, Now What?

January 21, 2020

1 Min read

Who knew that having curly hair comes along with a whole language you have to learn how to decode? Luckily, we’ve broken down all your 2b, 4a, 3b and more needs into an easy to follow guide. Think of this as the curly girl method 2.0, adapted to fit Prose’s standards. From wavy to coily hair, here’s exactly how to make your curls pop.

Wavy

Cleanse
Once a week using a sulfate-free shampoo.

Condition
Wash conditioner out completely and follow up with a leave-in.

Dry & Style
Flip hair upside down and apply your curl cream in sections. Rake and scrunch your hair, then air dry or diffuse.

Pro Tip: Be sure to diffuse using only low to medium heat to prevent damage.

Curly

Cleanse
Once a week to every ten days using a sulfate-free shampoo.

Condition
For added moisture, leave some conditioner in your hair when rinsing or wash out completely and follow with a leave-in.

Dry & Style
Apply your curl cream in sections and then layer with a few drops of hair oil for an extra boost of hydration. Then either diffuse or air dry.

Pro Tip: Air drying your hair will give your curls a more natural, defined look, while diffusing your hair will provide less definition, but more volume, lift and length.

Coily

Cleanse
Shampoo only when necessary (ideally as little as possible). To refresh curls in-between cleanses, just re-wet your hair and condition.

Condition
Opt to leave a little conditioner in your hair, or rinse out completely and follow up with a leave-in.

Dry & Style
Diffuse or air dry strands, then style in various ways using curl cream including a wash n’ go, the LOC method or a twist out.

Pro Tip: If you twist out your hair, allow twists to fully dry overnight or under a hooded dryer before unravelling them.

The No List:
Heat
Fragrance
Sulfates
Non water-soluble silicones
Alcohol
Waxes and mineral oils

  1. Just got my curl cream, and haven’t tried as I have old product in my hair. But I’m really impressed with the quality of your packaging!

And 1 question. I ordered mine unscented. Don’t love the smell. Assuming I do love using it, how strong ARE your scents? Any way to get a tiny sample…would be looking for something woodsy or citrus scented.

    1. Hi, Margo! Thanks so much for reaching out to us, though we’re sorry to hear that you’re not 100% happy with your custom filled Curl Cream. We’ve followed up with you at the email address associated with your account to help! Talk to you soon 🙂

  2. got my curl cream, have used it a few times but it leaves my hair feeling dry which makes me feel like its actually damaging it 🙁

  3. The curl cream is perfect for my hair! Now i WOULD like to try the Leave in condtioner,
But want adjust my formula & add a light rose fragrance
    Thank you, chrIstine

  4. Hi.
I have the curl cream and conditioner. I love the packaging, scents, etc., but am a bit underwhelmed with the detangling ability of the conditioner, and the curl cream just doesn’t hold unless I use gobs of it…and then it is just too much product in my hair. The hair oil is the best product of the package I received and find that if I mix it with the curl cream I get a slightly better hold. I am bi-racial and have a mix of curl types all in the 3’s. Suggestions?

  5. Got my curl cream. It works really well!
However, I didn’t know it contained jojoba oil and I am allergic to it!
It was making my scalp and face itchy.
Too bad, I loved the product!

  6. I am loving this product so far, and these tips are great. I have a question for the experts. My hair is curly, and I am learning to embrace it for the first time in my life. What’s the best way to refresh my curls in between washes?

    1. Hi Kara! Try mixing a bit of your Prose Conditioner and water in a spray bottle and mist it onto hair in between wash days. This will help tame frizz and add moisture. You can also use Curl Cream to refresh curls in between your wash days! Try dampening your hair and apply a super small amount of Curl Cream onto curls that need to be redefined 🙂

  7. Hi! Been using the shampoo, conditioner and curl cream for about two weeks now. Love the scent and feel of my hair but I don’t love the texture of my curls yet – I was wondering if you all could recommend or make a video (visual learner, here) of someone with curly hair applying the curl cream? I am accustomed to using mouse and it turns out the methods for application are not the same. Thanks!

  8. Hi there! Been using my shampoo, conditioner and curl cream for 2 weeks now and love the way my hair smells and feels. I haven’t fallen in love with my curl texture yet and was wondering if y’all could recommend a video of someone applying your curl cream – visual learner here and not sure I am applying correctly. Thanks!

    1. Hey Grayson! Make sure to check out our Instagram page (@prose), we have a ton of product tutorials there 🙂

  9. I really like using the curl cream. are the pumps you see in the photos (and the directions give quantities in “pumps”) sold separately? mine didn’t come with a pump.

    1. Thanks for this question! All first-time orders arrive with pumps. They can be found under the bottles in the box. We ask that our customers reuse their pumps for reorders, however, you can still request a new set as needed. If you did not receive pumps with your shipment at all, please email our CX Team at hello@prosehair.com and they will arrange for a set to be sent ASAP!

    1. Hi Kimberly, try mixing a bit of your Prose conditioner and water in a spray bottle and spritz onto 2nd day curls. This will help to tame frizz and add moisture back into your strands! You can also use Curl Cream to refresh curls in between your wash days! Try dampening your hair and apply a super small amount of Curl Cream onto curls that need to be redefined 🙂 ❤️

    1. Hi there! We recommend applying your Leave-In Conditioner to wet or damp hair to help lock in the moisture and knock out frizz. You can use it after you wash your hair as part of your styling routine ?

  10. So far love the products, shampoo and conditioner. Just got the curly cream and used it only twice and so far like it too. I see you recommend to wash hair once a week? Is that correct? Thank you.

    1. Hey Karina! The frequency of cleansing really depends on your hair type and concerns. People with fine hair may have to wash their hair 2-3 times a week depending on their oil levels and those with a coarser texture may wash once a week or less to help preserve moisture. We recommend experimenting with your cleansing frequency to figure out what works best for you! 🙂

  11. Should I use the curl cream only after having washed my hair? Or is it something I can/should use more frequently than that?

    1. Hi Emma, we recommend using your Curl Cream after washing your hair as part of your styling routine. You can also use it to refresh curls in between your wash day! Try dampening your hair and apply a super small amount of Curl Cream onto curls that need to be redefined 🙂

  12. I have been using your products for about two weeks and I absolutely love them! The curl cream is my favorite. It’s light but controls the frizz and helps create soft beautiful curls. I’ll definitely be ordering some more!?

  13. I have very dry frizzy hair that use to have a lot of split ends. I use to use so many products trying to condition my hair and control the frizz that it wouldn’t take long for it to get greasy which made my hair look dirty and feel weighted down. I have used the shampoo, conditioner, and curl cream three times now, The shampoo is great at getting my hair clean without drying it out like most products I have used in the past. The conditioner is great leaving my hair easy to comb out without making it feel weighted down, and the curl cream make my hair soft, easy to comb, and feels light weight as well. I also noticed that my hair did not feel as greasy or dirty when I went it was time to wash it again so far it is the best product I have ever used on my hair.
The only negative thing I have to say is I am not liking the fragrance but I can add any essential oil to help with that so I will be ordering the prose product again

    1. Hi Teri Ann, we’re so glad to hear you’re loving your Prose products! For your second order, you can always change your fragrance to try something new or adjust your products to be fragrance-free ❤️

  14. I need help with frizz, this weather-humid, heat, and rain gives me frizzy knotty hair. The curl cream helps if I stay in but as soon as I leave the house it’s a mess.

    1. Hi there! We recommend layering on a lightweight botanical gel on top of your custom Curl Cream to tame frizz.

    1. Hi Sara! While it does not have expiration dates, we do recommend using your products within 3-6 months of opening. This is because after that timeframe, the active ingredients become less potent making your product less effective. While your Curl Cream would still be safe to use, the end result may be different than what you’re used to!

  15. I have a question…I go to the health club 4 times a week where I sweat like crazy then spend time in the pool. So I feel like I have to wash my hair afterwards. But then my hair gets dry from over washing. I’ve thought about just rinsing my hair, and not washing it every time. But my hair feels so nasty after 2 hours of working out and swimming. Suggestions?

  16. My conditioner feels useless. Doesn’t do anything to hair. Something is not right about my hair conditioner sent to me. It leaves my hair very dry.

  17. I have to say that the shampoo leaves my hair dry and the curl cream doesn’t see to help with frizz or curl, my hair is thin and this really leaves my hair feeling frizzy and not touchable. I am better off using a spray thickener like Aveda and some smoothing cream. No thrilled at all unfortunately but you guess you have to try new things.

  18. Have used my curl cream with wet/damp hair and then air dried. I have wavy hair. The results are frizz and dry look. Any suggestions? Disappointed.

  19. I have used cleanser, conditioner, curl cream for 2 weeks now. I was used to washing every 3-4 days but with this product my hair is really frizzy on day 2. My curls are also less defined. Suggestions?

  20. I am trying Prose products for the first time. I love their texture, they smell amazing and my hair feels soft and shiny (not sure yet if it’s better than it used to be but it’s definitely not worse). Unfortunately, I am very disappointed with the curl cream. Instead of defining my curls, it makes my 2C hair straighter and very flat (like no volume at all at the roots). I tried using less product because to adjust to the texture and thickness of my hair, but it didn’t change anything. I am still glad I tried but I expected more 🙁

    1. Hi Am! We’re sorry to hear you’re not liking your Curl Cream. It seems your formula may be a bit too heavy on your strands. Please send us an email at hello@prose.com so we can get this sorted. Thanks!

  21. I’ve only recently started using Prose. Loving everything so far. I used my curl cream, and I think my curls are adjusting to a new product; however, I am out of town, did not bring hair products thinking I wouldn’t need them. I showered without washing my hair but it was wet, of course! My curls look amazing! Even with “leftover” curl cream , I have very little frizz, and my curls are awesome! Wow!

  22. Received my product. Waaaaay too scented.
Other than that, used a few times now and will see how it continues to feel. I don’t know if I can tolerate the strong perfume though.

  23. I understand only using shampoo once a week, but what about the conditioner and curl cream? Are you saying to only use those once a week as well?

    1. Hi Jen! It really all depends on your hair type, concerns, and lifestyle habits. If you have curly hair that you’re looking to refresh in between wash days, we recommend re-wetting your hair to apply Curl Cream and/or Styling Gel as needed 🙂
