Why You Should Stock Up On Dry Shampoo When Winter Hits

September 19, 2019

3 Min read

Winter weather can wreak havoc on hair. With low temps, snowy conditions and a parade of hats and scarves in rotation, seasonal conditions can leave even the most luscious tresses dry, static-y and flat. One surprising solution? Dry shampoo. Often discussed as a remedy for our most sweat-inducing moments (i.e., high temps and vigorous workouts), dry shampoo can have several unexpected benefits during frosty winter months. Below, tips for using dry shampoo to fight winter hair woes.

Stretch out your wash days

Washing your hair with high-quality shampoo and conditioner can have lasting benefits. However, washing your hair too frequently can strip it of the natural oils that help protect follicles from winter wear and tear. Dry shampoo allows you to extend the time between your washes. Apply a light, even layer on hair and work it through with your fingers or a brush to soak up excess oil. You’ll be able to go another day without lathering up, which will help to keep your hair moist and nourished longer. Plus, you’ll be able to avoid that dreaded post-shower, winter freeze we all hate.

Avoid heat tools

Hot tools can break and dry out hair, especially during trying winter months when hair is already parched. Because hair straighteners work with your hair’s natural lubricants, when applied to dry strands, they do more harm than good, damaging the hair shaft and sometimes causing irreparable damage. Heat can be especially hard on thin, fine hair. To avoid using heat styling tools, spritz dry shampoo on hair to set styles in place. An even coating of dry shampoo will create a “grip,” preventing the dreaded slipping and loosening of styles (almost like hairspray, but without the “crunch.”) You’ll be able to create heatless-curls, waves and other styles that look full, vibrant and bouncy.

Combat static, hat hair

Great hairstyles are no match for winter hats. Made of cotton, wool and other dense fibers, seasonal hats can flatten hair and leave roots looking lifeless. Dry shampoo applied to the roots and can pump volume back into the hair. Spray a light, even layer across the scalp, tousle hair and within a few minutes you’ll have fuller, thicker roots that will have you asking, ‘What hat?’.

Remember, winter-proofing is a process

While dry shampoo can revolutionize your winter hair care routine, remember that winter-proofing your hair will take a little effort. In the dry winter months, invest in shampoos and conditioners made for your hair type that promise to deliver hydrating benefits. You may also want to add a hair mask to your weekly routine and a moisturizing leave-in conditioner to your daily. Keeping your hair clean and moisturized in the winter will ensure that your strands stay healthy and resilient all the way up till the weather heats up.
