The Expert Guide to Sebum and Your Hair

October 8, 2021

1 Min read

If you haven’t heard before, there’s a reason why your hair becomes oily. It can become greasy for the same reason that your face does: glands in the skin create sebum, an oily material.

The sebaceous glands generate sebum and are situated near the hair roots in the dermis layer of the skin. The sebaceous glands have channels that go to the hair follicle, which is how sebum comes out of the skin and onto your scalp.

Sebum is a mixture of lipids produced by the human body (including triglycerides, fatty acids, cholesterol, and more). It’s generated in the hair follicle; it lubricates the hair follicle and disperses across the scalp’s (and skin’s) surface to assist in the prevention of moisture loss.

What does scalp buildup look like?

One of the reasons for sebum accumulation on the scalp is hyper seborrhea (an increase in sebum production). Sebum is necessary for our scalps, but an overproduction could be harmful to our hair health. Scalp buildup can be the result of:

  • Sebum buildup
  • Dead skin cells
  • Sweat
  • Excess build-up from hair products

The following are some of the signs and symptoms of scalp buildup:

  • A flaky scalp
  • Skin that is oily or crusty (called cradle cap in infants)
  • Redness
  • Irritation of the scalp

How to prevent scalp buildup

Using a clarifying shampoo is a wonderful way to keep scalp buildup at bay. Whether you use a lot of hair products in your day-to-day routine or occasionally, it is incredibly helpful to deeply cleanse your hair.

Our Custom Shampoo helps cut down on grease in the hair without removing the good-for-you natural oils. Prose custom shampoo is a mild, sulfate-free cleanser that takes care of everything from root balance to light moisturizing.

Another way to boost the health of your scalp and hair is to use a scalp mask. Our custom Pre-Shampoo Scalp Mask can help bring balance to your scalp whether you require soothing repair or a mild detox. This mask works to restore the health of your scalp and bring nourishment to your hair.

A healthy scalp is a foundation for healthy hair. Our new scalp mask is strong in active ingredients and has a micro-exfoliating texture to help restore balance and cleanse your scalp, leaving your skin soothed and revitalized without buildup or residue. The mask also thoroughly prepares your hair for the upcoming shampoo and conditioner.

Bring more moisture into the picture

In addition to cleansing your scalp, it is also helpful to treat your hair in order for your hair to stop over-producing oils or sebum. A healthy scalp is a balanced scalp. Try our custom Pre-Shampoo Hair Mask, and add hydration and moisture to your hair. This pre-wash treatment replenishes hydration and smoothness to hair lengths and ends.

To hydrate and restore the lengths and ends of your hair, our hair mask is tailored with the right amount of hydrating elements. The amount of time you use it and how often you use it will depend on your hair’s demands, so read the leaflet that arrives with your order for some personalized advice. The mask should be applied to damp hair before shampooing and kept on for up to 30 minutes, depending on your individual needs.

How to get rid of scalp buildup

If you run into scalp buildup, there are a few ways to target this issue.

First, you should make a point to thoroughly wash your hair every few days. With the wave of popularity around dry shampoo, it can be hard to prioritize washing your hair. Your hair shouldn’t be washed every day, but try to wash frequently to limit buildup.

Sadly, washing your hair too frequently can contribute to the overproduction of sebum. That’s because washing too often can dry your scalp out and in turn, your scalp will produce too much sebum.

Next, you can try to rinse with apple cider vinegar. Some of our products include apple cider vinegar to help bring shine to your hair. Less buildup means more shine and glow.

How to take care of the sebum in your hair

Sebum is a natural oil that helps to maintain hair quality and is frequently referred to as nature’s greatest conditioner. Keeping your hair moisturized is a great way to take care of the natural production of sebum in your hair. Overwashing and over-brushing can damage your hair, but keeping your hair nourished and keeping your scalp cleansed can truly help your hair’s sebum production.
