Meet the Women Behind Your Prose

March 4, 2020

1 Min read

Did you know that our Research and Development Team is made up of all women? That’s right, every one of your Prose products starts with a team of seven, amazing female chemists who work hard to develop first class formulas. And even then, they’re never satisfied. They believe that there’s always room for improvement and are constantly on top of the latest innovations in ingredients and hair care, putting their knowledge right back into your products, ensuring that your hair care is always as savvy as it can be. Here, get to know a little about the women behind your Prose.

Catherine: Co-Founder and R&D Advisor

Star Sign: Aries

Hometown: Rouen, France

Years with Prose: From its inception!

How did you come to work for Prose?

A year and a half before Prose officially launched, I was contacted by Arnaud, our CEO, to help create the first formulas. I wasn’t a novice when it came to personalized hair care. I actually used to create ultra-personalized hair care for a brand who was customizing formulas on demand for celebrities (Robert de Niro for instance!) However, throughout my entire career I had never taken on a project as big as what Arnaud was dreaming of! So I was extremely excited to take on the challenge.

What’s the most exciting part of developing a product?

I love the beginning stages of developing a product, when I feel like a chef who’s concocting a recipe, choosing the best ingredients and discovering how they will all blend and work best together.

Marie: R&D Director

Star Sign: Capricorn

Hometown: Bordeaux, France

Years with Prose: Since the start!

What made you want to become a scientist?

As all children are, I was always extremely curious and inquisitive when I was young. I’ve always been especially interested in understanding the science behind everyday phenomenons. I remember I used to read biology textbooks like they were Harry Potter novels. I just loved learning!

What’s your favorite hair fun fact?

When hair gets wet, it can swell up to 10 percent of its original diameter and even more when hair is damaged. In fact, I’ve seen swelling measurements of over 50 percent on bleached hair. This swelling causes hair to be much more fragile and prone to breakage.

Mathilde: R&D Project Manager

Star Sign: Scorpio

Hometown: Paris, France

Years with Prose: From the beginning!

Why did you choose to work in the hair care industry?

Well first off, hair is fascinating isn’t it? Every hair is different and there are so many types, lengths and colors (which is exactly why personalization makes sense). Since there are so many variations we have to work with and discover it’s impossible to get bored. Every day is a new and fun challenge!

What is your favorite device in the lab?

The rotor stator! This magical, little tool is able to combine water and oil and transform the two into one beautiful cream!

Aline: R&D Project Manager

Star Sign: Sagitarius

Hometown: Morteau, France

Years with Prose: 2 years (I started off as an intern and then was offered a full time position 6 months in!)

How did you come to work for Prose?

It all started because I was looking for an internship in the cosmetic field. When I saw the Prose listing I was immediately intrigued by the concept of customization and all the challenges that came along with it. So, I applied, met Mathilde and it was a match! I learned and grew so much during my six month internship that when Prose offered me a full time position I didn’t hesitate for a second! This is my first job and what a journey it’s been. I feel safe, am pushed to challenge myself daily and work with such passionate people. It’s truly a dream.

What’s your favorite hair fun fact?

Definitely hair’s strength! It’s a true athlete that can hold up to 100x its weight.

Milene: R&D Senior Manager

Star Sign: Cancer

Hometown: Paris, France

Years with Prose: 1 year

Do you have any female role models that you look up to?

Marie Curie, for sure. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize for her study into spontaneous radiation in 1903. I was first introduced to her and her work in school when I was a little girl and the more I learned about her, the more she inspired me.

What’s your hair care routine like?

I have a sensitive scalp, so I love to use our Prose pre-shampoo mask by massaging it onto my scalp. Sometimes I’ll even add a few drops of our custom hair oil to make the treatment extra nourishing. After that, I’ll shampoo and condition my hair. On the second and third day after washing, I’ll use our leave-in conditioner to refresh my hair and a bit of dry shampoo on the third day or just anytime I need to add a little grip to strands.

Anne-Sophie: R&D Senior Manager

Star Sign: Cancer

Hometown: Dijon, France

Years with Prose: 6 months

What’s an area of science that peaks your interest?

Anything that has to do with reducing our carbon footprint (upcycling, regenerative agriculture, chemical bioprocesses, etc), including the methodologies used to calculate this impact.

What was your biggest hair regret?

I dyed my hair with henna when I was a teenager and it came out as a reddish shade. It looked crazy for months as it was growing out because I had an awful line of demarcation!

Sarah: R&D Project Leader

Star Sign: Cancer

Hometown: Lyon, France

Years with Prose: 3 months

Do you have any female role models that you look up to?

Frida Kahlo. She was strong, forward-thinking and independent. A true beauty icon.

What’s the most exciting part of developing a product?

I love the very beginning, where we really break down what consumers need and try to build a product around that.
