Is It Best To Brush Your Hair Wet or Dry?

Did you know that your hair is much weaker and compromised when it’s wet? The hairs that would normally easily glide through a brush have a much harder time doing so when wet. Just like sleeping with wet hair can be damaging, brushing through wet hair can cause unnecessary friction and breakage to your strands.

We recommend letting hair air dry before brushing and trying to use a wide-toothed comb during or after the shower. This is also a wonderful time to work in some leave-in conditioner, which can help moisturize and detangle your hair, and make brushing a lot easier.

How can you avoid brushing your hair when it’s wet? Read below for tips.

Brush through your hair before it gets wet

Try to brush through your locks before you shower or take a dip in the pool. This will help alleviate some of the stress of brushing afterward. Sometimes hair can knot up a lot after showering, which can lead to a lot of damage. Trying to brush your hair before cleansing and conditioning can tremendously help your hair.

You can also try to use our Custom Pre-Shampoo Hair Mask, which can add moisture and nourishment to your hair before you shampoo. This high-concentration pre-wash treatment that hydrates and smoothes hair lengths and ends. Before you shampoo, the cuticle of your hair is more responsive to our calming mask. It also aids in a softer, irritation-free clean with your shampoo.

Make sure to use a conditioning product

Whether you are conditioning before the wash, during, or after, it’s extremely helpful for your hair’s health. On top of using our pre-shampoo hair mask, we also recommend our Custom Leave-In Conditioner

This moisturizing leave-in spray smooths and detangles flyaways, leaving strands silky, glossy, and manageable. Using this product can significantly help remove the tangles and allow you to brush through your hair (after it dries a bit, of course).

Our Custom Curl Cream is also perfect for those with wavy, curly, or coily hair. This cream defines your natural texture—from waves to curls and coils—while keeping strands nourished and frizz-free when used as a styler or for touch-ups. This cream adds hydration to hair and can make it much easier to brush through your hair, or nourish your hair so much that you aren’t worried about brushing.

Allow your hair to air dry

You don’t have to let your hair dry completely, but at least try to let it air dry by 80% before you start to use your hairdryer. It can bring extra damage to your hair to jump right into drying your hair with heat when it’s fully wet.

Also, instead of roughly handling your hair with a cotton towel, try to dry your hair more gently. If possible, use a microfiber towel. These towels are extremely gentle on hair and make drying easy.

When you comb or brush, start at the ends

It seems to make the most sense to start brushing at our roots and work our way down. But, unfortunately, this is the most damaging way to brush through your hair. Brushing from the roots can contribute to more knots in your hair as you brush.

Try to start brushing at the ends of your hair when you are working through knots and tangles. As you move from bottom to top, your hair will be much easier to brush through, and you will not have created any unnecessary tangles.

Pay close attention to your brush

Not all brushes have your best hair in mind. Pay attention to the type of brush you are using, and see if it’s potentially adding damage to your hair. Take a look at the brush that you are using, and try to see if it is a brush that is gentle on your hair.

Take a look at our brushes, and see how we offer several options made specifically for certain hair types. Our boar bristle brush is one of the most well-known brushes for brushing and styling, and for being easier on your hair.

Why brushing dry hair is better

When you brush dry hair, you are moving your hair’s natural oils from root to tip. Instead of contributing to damage because of brushing wet hair, you could significantly help your hair by moving oils throughout your hair, which could strengthen your strands.

Here are a few benefits of brushing your hair when brushing it properly:

Although brushing your hair using the correct method can be immensely helpful for your hair, you should also remember to refrain from brushing your hair too vigorously, as this could lead to damage or breakage as well.

    Prose products to try

Like we mentioned, our custom leave-in conditioner and pre-shampoo hair mask are perfect for aiding in brushing and detangling. These two products will also bring hydration and nourishment to your hair.

Another great addition to your hair care products is our Custom Hair Oil. This premium oil preserves strands and smooths away unwanted frizz whether used as a treatment before washing or as a styling finish.
