The Best Post-Workout Hair Care Tips

June 7, 2018

1 Min read

At this point it probably goes without saying that cleansing your face of all the oil and sweat after a workout plays a major role in maintaining a great complexion. Often less discussed is what to do to maintain a balanced scalp. Here, a few simple post-workout tips to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy, without stripping it of all the good stuff.

OPT FOR SULFATE-FREE SHAMPOO

It’s important to pay attention to your post-workout hair washing routine, especially if you’re working out daily. You want to ensure balanced sebum levels to get your best, healthiest hair. A formula free of sulfates, which are often found in shampoos, is your safest best. Sulfate-free shampoos use surfactants that will cleanse your scalp of excess oil without stripping. In our Prose formulas, our surfactants are derived from amino acids and coconuts to cleanse naturally, yet thoroughly, and are based on your very specific hair care needs.

LOOK FOR HYALURONIC ACID

A post-workout hair savior is hyaluronic acid. It’s a superstar natural active ingredient for those who need extra hydration, since it has the ability to hold 1,000 times its weight in water. You may be familiar with hyaluronic acid in your face serums and eye creams, but in your hair products? You better believe it! Think about it, your scalp is literally an extension of your face, and similarly, it too should be treated with care. Your skin can get oily, even if it’s dehydrated just below the surface, so using products that both moisturize your scalp and prevent your stands from being stripped of good-for-you oils is the perfect combo.

IF YOU WASH DAILY, INGREDIENTS MATTER

How you work out and where you do it matter. Depending on your workout routine, your roots are getting sweaty, and you may even be exposed to UV rays and chlorine. These daily sessions that require post-workout shampoos can strip hair over, which tricks your scalp into going into oil overdrive — the exact issue that is most problematic after the gym. Using natural ingredients that cleanse, balance and moisturize — like fruit vinegar, honey, and jojoba oil — allows you to cleanse your scalp and your hair, without the risk of drying out your scalp, which can result in this type of overactive sebum production. When possible, skip the full hair wash: hop in the shower and rinse with cool water then style. You’d be surprised how much of that oil can be cleansed away with a good head massage and clean water.

DON’T FORGET TO MASK

Selfcare can sometimes fall to the bottom of your priority list, but here’s a way to indulge in a hair treatment that allows you to treat any post-workout damage. The hair mask works by penetrating and conditioning the hair shaft from the inside out, allowing for intense repair. Since it’s an intensive treatment, you only need to use every few days (depending on your hair, of course) so off days from the gym are perfect. If you’re at the gym seven days a week, more power to you.

The Prose consultation takes into account how you work out and the impact on your hair, whether you’re a swimmer, an outdoor adventure seeker or prefer to sweat it out indoors — or all of the above. Start your consultation here.
