What Exactly Makes Our Shimmer Hair Oil Sustainable?
The problem with glitter in cosmetics
You may or may not be aware of the harmful impact that cosmetic glitter has on our environment. Unfortunately, many glitters contain microplastics that often accumulate and have a negative effect on marine life. The alternative, mineral glitters, aren’t any better, as they are often sourced from countries where labor conditions are less than humane and child-free labor is hard to guarantee. Glitters are also often coated with titanium dioxide via nanoparticles to alter their color. Recently, the European Commission classified titanium dioxide as a suspected carcinogen, which means it has the potential to cause cancer. Even gold, if it’s not pure, is sometimes considered toxic. All of this sounds pretty scary, right? Well, not to worry, Prose shimmer powders don’t raise any of these red flags and are both 100% sustainable. Here’s how.
Our sustainable bronze and pure gold powders
The stars of Prose shimmer hair oil are our bronze and pure gold powders. They are both natural, plastic and mica-free, non-processed, non-ecotoxic, mineral particles. As mentioned above, mineral powders often raise concerns when it comes to labor conditions. However, our bronze powder is sourced from Japan and is certified conflict-free, responsibly-produced, and guaranteed to not involve any child labor. Our pure gold powder has a unique backstory as it’s sustainably sourced from Germany and is made from upcycled jewelry. Just like our bronze powder, it is also certified conflict-free, responsibly-produced, and guaranteed to not involve any child labor. As for titanium dioxide, Prose glitters are completely free from it. Lastly, our pure gold powder raises zero concerns around toxicity due to it’s pure nature.
The Prose team on shimmer hair oil
Our Product Innovation and R&D team has been working tirelessly to perfect our shimmer hair oil and are so excited to share it with our community. Here’s what they have to say:
“Screening the bronze and gold powders was such an exciting challenge. I’m proud to say that we have very high quality powders—our gold is even 100% pure!! The happiness and joy that shimmer brings to everyone’s life is amazing. It’s so nice to see the smile on people’s faces when they shake the bottle and see the magic happen. Everyone needs a bit of glitter!”
– Mathilde Sitter, R&D Project Leader
“The sustainable sourcing story behind our shimmer hair oil is what I’m most proud of when it comes to this product. A lot of effort and love went into coming up with a product that is not only as fabulous as our shimmer hair oil is, but is also made with sustainable, responsible, and transparently sourced glitters. I LOVE how everyone is completely in awe with it as soon as they see it. I think it sparks joy and glee and it’s so fun to see people’s faces when they first try it.”

Hi Emily,
Great to read about some sustainability. What about gold particles getting washed down the drain? Won’t that go into our water supply like microbeads? I’d love to hear more about that aspect!
Thanks!
