Everything you need to know about Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate
What is Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate?
Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate is a cleansing and foaming agent that’s both thorough and gentle.
Derived from sarcosine, an amino acid that occurs naturally in the body, it works in haircare products by attracting excess oil and dirt, then carefully removing the grime from the hair. It emulsifies oil and dirt, making it easy to rinse away easily with water.
The difference between Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate are both cleansing and foaming agents, but that’s where the similarities end.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is bad news for hair. Derived from petroleum or palm oil, it can be harsh, irritating, and overly aggressive, stripping hair of color and natural oils. The ingredient produces high levels of foam and can leave hair feeling really dry. It’s found in plenty of conventional shampoos, body washes, and detergents, with some formulations less environmentally-friendly than others.
Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, on the other hand, is mild and suitable for even the most sensitive skin types. The ingredient creates a creamy, moderate lather, helping hair and skin maintain their natural oils. Biodegradable and eco-friendly, it’s found in premium sulfate-free haircare products.
Is Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate safe for hair and skin?
The short answer is yes, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate is safe for skin and hair. According to Environmental Working Group, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate gets the thumbs up from most green and clean beauty advocates. Its gentle and non-irritating properties make it a safe option for sensitive or dry skin types, and for color-treated, chemically processed, or naturally fragile hair.
What are the main benefits of Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate?
Sodium Lauroyl Sarconsinate has a wide variety of benefits as a haircare ingredient. These include:
- Thorough but gentle cleansing that doesn’t strip hair of natural oils
- Enhanced softness and mangeability of hair (especially damaged strands)
- Improved shine and body
- Reduced risk of irritation or dryness for sensitive scalps
- A more balanced scalp environment, which promotes healthy hair
- An eco-friendly alternative to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
Why we use Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate in Prose Shampoo
We’re big fans of Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate here at Prose. In fact, it’s one of the primary cleansing agents in our shampoos. Why? Quite simply because it works so well, gently cleansing the hair without ever over-stripping it. And as with most of our ingredients, we aim to get our Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate from the highest quality, most natural source we can find. Our Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate currently comes from coconuts.

Not true that it’s better. I’ve been using a toothpaste with this in, which it says is meant to be better but unfortunately it’s still making the skin peel off the inside of my mouth. No SLS, should mean NO DIFFERENT VERSIONS of SLS. Whether it’s Sulphate or Sarcosinate. No means no.. They’re both Palm Trees, whether it’s a Coconut Tree or a Oil Palm Tree. One is deemed better, but sadly still creates problems.
