Peptides
Peptides are miniature proteins that send signals to molecules to activate or inhibit the production of cell-fortifying components. Studies have shown that peptides can stimulate collagen or elastin production, inhibit the production of inflammatory agents to soothe skin and prevent aging caused by relaxed muscles fibers. In hair care, they can have a positive impact on the anchoring of hair bulbs in the scalp, making breakage and hair loss less prevalent.
Collagen and Elastin
Elastin is a springy protein found inside the dermis—the thick layer of tissue below the epidermis where “true skin” is formed and where blood capillaries, nerve endings, sweat glands and hair follicles are contained. Evidenced by its name, elastin gives skin its elasticity, allowing it to snapback after periods of stretching or contracting, such as being poked or pinched. It has gained a following because of its reputation for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles and tightening sagging skin.
Collagen, derived from the Greek word kola, or glue, is the most abundant protein in our connective tissue (think bones, muscles, etc.). Collagen treatments help strengthen and thicken skin, making it appear plumper2 and enhancing its perceived “youthfulness.” Collagen has traditionally been sourced from fish or mammals. However, vegan alternatives are on the rise, with collagen-like actives extracted from seaweeds now widely available. Here at Prose, we use collagen from the acacia tree.
At some point, we all experience a steady, gradual decline in our natural collagen and elastin, leading to drier, less firm and more wrinkled skin. The same can happen to hair, leaving it dry, brittle and lifeless. Elastin and collagen help hair follicles stay anchored to the scalp and promote continued hair growth and lasting moisture.
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is a clear, gel-like material that our bodies produce naturally in the soft, complex parts of the body like the skin, eyes and connective tissue. Each molecule is a super-sponge with the ability to retain 1000 times its weight in water. Hyaluronic acid promotes continuous hydration, making it harder for redness and dermatitis to set in. In haircare, select amounts of hyaluronic acid can penetrate the outer layers of the cuticle and fight against dry scalp and thinning by increasing strand diameter.
Stem Cells
Stem cells are cells that have the ability to develop into other types of cells, and that have the ability to divide themselves to renew and produce more of the same type of stem cells. Stem cells are jam-packed with nutrients and phytoactives that can identify hair needs and work on them uniquely. At Prose, we use lilac plant cells, cultivated by leading technology, that are filled with phytoalexin actives that bring shine and moisture to hair fibers.
